Based around a British creature or a theme, our EYFS workshops take budding wildlife lovers on a multi-sensory journey through a range of fun, educational activities, including role-play, hunts and crafts. All designed to support their understanding of the natural world.
Each workshop is brought to life with a prickly, furry or feathered interaction by The British Wildlife Rescue Centre, giving children the opportunity to make a connection to our wonderful wildlife.
Whilst educating our next generation of wildlife lovers, our workshops help to raise vital funds for The British Wildlife Rescue Centre - helping them to rehabilitate our local wildlife at their hospital near Stafford!
Children will share a story with a rescued hedgehog from the British Wildlife Rescue Centre before discovering what his prickles really feel like. They'll become hedgehogs - hunting for worms and rolling up in to balls before creating their own hedgehog made from clay.
With the help of a story sack, children will get to know Sarah, Percy and Bill - The Owl Babies. They will meet and stroke a real owl from the British Wildlife Rescue Centre, learn what an owl's favourite night-time snack is (and how they manage to find them in the dark 🐭), all before creating their own 'Owl Babies' collage to take home.
What laid the mystery egg? 🥚 Children will venture on an egg hunt with a twist, discovering many of the different creatures that lay eggs! They’ll follow the lifecycle of a barn owl and then learn all about frogs and their lifecycles by replicating the cycle - in a pond! Watch out for the hungry heron! They’ll see if all eggs look the same and learn some of the places where creatures like to make their nests. They’ll create butterfly lifecycle artwork and meet a real egg-laying friend from The British Wildlife Rescue Centre!
As Autumn turns to Winter, learn how some of our favourite British creatures prepare for the colder weather – who hibernates, who migrates and who stores their acorns in the ground. All the answers will be revealed as children follow the adventures of a little goose as she finds her place in the world, help some forgetful squirrels to find their acorns and meet a bunch of hibernating creatures – including a real one from the British Wildlife Rescue Centre. We’ll then think about the creatures who don’t prepare for the winter and need a helping hand from us – filling a tasty bird feeder for the class to keep!
Through exploring the book 'Oliver's Wood', children will be introduced to some of his daytime and night-time friends! After sorting the characters from the story, children will meet one of his nocturnal friends from The British Wildlife Rescue Centre. Helping them to learn why nocturnal creatures are nocturnal, they'll help a bat, an owl and a badger hunt for their suppers, all before creating their own daytime & night-time picture to take home!
Based around the book ‘WOW! said the owl’ by Tim Hopgood. Children will follow the adventures of a curious little owl who decides to stay awake all day, instead of all night, and discovers a world bursting with colour! This story will be brought to life by the British Wildlife Rescue Centre, who will introduce children to a real owl from their wildlife hospital. Following the story, children will discover the meaning of camouflage by hunting and hiding caterpillars and then will explore creature patterns… can they help the ladybird, deer and frog to find their spots? Finally, the little artists will get creative, creating their own 'colours & camouflage' work of art to take home!

"Hoglets wildlife visited our nursery with their hedgehog, as part of our Autumn topic. The staff were amazing and kept the children fully engaged and captivated by the hedgehog and the supporting activity which they provided and carried out for the children.
I used a child's E.Y.P.P. money to fund this event and its the best decision I ever made. This activity managed to cover all 7 areas of the E.Y,.F.S. and met all the children's individual needs. It gave the children an opportunity to handle a hedgehog which is something that most of them would never have done before, it links lovely with our 'Awe & Wonder' ethos.
We will definitely be having them back "
